OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio -- How would you like to place a bed under a child who has been sleeping on the floor?

You can do that starting at 10 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 10) with the local organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace–OH, Cuyahoga W chapter.

Susie and Kevan Asadorian, the chapter’s founders, invite you to join their portion of Bunks Across America, where thousands of volunteers will build bunk beds throughout our country. The local group’s goal is to construct 50 beds in four hours.

Volunteers will learn right there on the “job.” They don’t need to bring a thing, other than a water bottle. Dress in clothing ready to work and wear closed-toe shoes. The rest will be provided at Lowe’s, 20639 Center Ridge Road in Rocky River, where the build will again occur.

The event begins at 10 a.m., rain or shine. Lowe’s is one of the organization’s national sponsors.

This is the second Bunks Across America the Olmsted Falls couple will head since the local chapter began in late 2020. Last year, this column featured the chapter at its first build to bring beds to those who have none. Since then, the chapter has grown.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace, the national organization, has been building beds and bunk beds for kids for a number of years.

“We have delivered 272 beds so far to children in western Cuyahoga County. We’ve grown from eight core team members to 22 and have welcomed and trained more than 300 corporate and community volunteers in building and delivering beds to kids,” Susie said.

“We are so proud to be able to continue our mission that ‘No Kid Sleeps On The Floor In Our Town!’”

You may volunteer for the build by going to the group’s website, shpbeds.org/chapter/oh-cuyahoga-w/, or its Facebook page.

You may help in other ways if you cannot build. The group has its Bedding Drive also at the Lowe’s location on Saturday. It is accepting children’s bedding, such as new twin sheets, blankets, pillows, pillowcases and mattress protectors.

You may find these items yourself in stores or click on the Amazon link available on the group’s website or Facebook page.

Susie said the need to build a bed for a child has grown over the last few years. She said prior to receiving their own bed, children have slept on wooden pallets with blankets covering them, on piles of clothing or blankets on the floor, and on cots or mattresses on the floor.

“There are more people out of work and unable to supply a bed for their child -- or children -- for lack of income. We have delivered beds to a lot of single parents,” Susie said.

“We delivered several right before school started. It is just so wonderful to see smiles on their faces. Some want to help by holding a tool or putting a pillowcase on their new pillow. We have built beds for teenagers -- the first they’ve had.”

The chapter helps families and their children who live in the following ZIP code areas: 44070, 44017, 44107, 44111, 44116, 44126, 44135, 44138, 44140, 44142 and 44145. Beds are available for children ages 3 through 17. If you need a bed for your children or know those who do, complete a request form. It is available at shpbeds.org/apply and tfaforms.com/4941594. There is no cost in receiving beds or bedding.

Susie said there are many requests for beds in the Cleveland area, for which a chapter is now being trained. It will be the 12th Ohio chapter.

Saturday brings an opportunity to create a huge smile on a child’s face and a safe place in which to sleep.

If you cannot attend, you may contribute by donating bedding at locations near us. The Olmsted Community Center, 8170 Mapleway Drive in Olmsted Falls, and the North Olmsted Evangelical Friends Church, 5665 Great Northern Blvd. in North Olmsted, are two local drop-off spots.

You also may send a check to help the cause to Sleep in Heavenly Peace-OH, Cuyahoga W, P.O. Box 38401, Olmsted Falls, OH 44138.

Thanks to the Asadorians and all who continue to help children in this simple, yet so needed activity.

Traveling Bulldog: The latest local fun activity is seeing a “You have been Bulldogged” sign in front yards throughout the neighborhoods.

The Olmsted Falls PTA Council is sponsoring the signs, which are available by making a donation to the group and providing an address at which the sign will be placed. Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the PTA’s Scholarship Fund for the Class of 2023. Donations start at $10.

You may sign up at olmstedfalls.memberhub.com or call Kelly at 216-403-9492 to Bulldog a friend or remove the sign.

Senior discount: Olmsted Township seniors 60 and older may apply for a reduced trash rate through Republic. The savings is about $30 a year.

The township has a senior registration form on its website that allows seniors to apply for various complimentary services, including the reduced trash rate. You only need to complete the simple form and return it to the Olmsted Township Police Department, 26900 Cook Road.

The form is available at olmstedtownship.org/senior-information or by calling 440-235-3099.

Beatles tribute concert: The Beatles are coming to Olmsted Township. Well, Revolution Pie, a Beatles tribute band, that is.

The band will play at the Donauschwaben German-American Cultural Center Nov. 12.

The music, however, is just part of the fun. Enjoy a pork schnitzel dinner and a chance at a 50-50 drawing, sideboards and raffle baskets. A cash bar also will be available.

The cost for the dinner and show is $40 by Oct. 15 and $45 after that date. To reserve tickets, email tennis@donauschwabencleveland.com or go to donauschwabencleveland.com and click on Revolution Pie.

Proceeds of this event benefit Blau-Weiss Tennis and the Edelweiss Ski Club.

The center is located at 7370 Columbia Road.

Celebrate Irish: The city will have its Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday (Sept. 8) at the Charles A. Harding Memorial Bridge. Neighboring news: The Berea Arts Fest is this Sunday (Sept. 11) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Front Street. It’s free and will occur rain or shine. More than 100 professional fine arts and crafters will have their work for sale.

It’s one of my favorite area events. You’ll find some great buys for gifts or yourself. The event also has a demonstrating artist, art raffle, a Kid’s Kreation Station and food.

Update: I thank everyone for all your kind thoughts and prayers for my husband, Bob, who has pancreatic cancer. He has completed chemotherapy.

I ask you to please keep him in your prayers Sept. 15 when he will undergo Whipple surgery at University Hospital’s main campus. It is not a cure, but it is a blessing that is available to him -- and us. Thank you.
