Best Sheets of 2022 - Our Top 12 Picks! - Mattress Clarity

2022-06-18 23:22:19 By : Ms. Josie Wu

No one wants to sleep on just a bare mattress. With so many different types of sheets out there, it can be hard to know what to pick. Everyone likes something different, so I’ve compiled a list of some of the best sheets for 2022!

Keep reading to see our picks.

Casper is known as one of the first bed-in-a-box companies. Since its debut, Casper has expanded its inventory and the company’s Hyperlite sheets are some of my favorites out there, so they had to be our editor’s pick!

Made from Tencel, a natural material derived from eucalyptus, these sheets are very different from the traditional fabrics like cotton or flannel. Tencel is breathable, cool to the touch, and has moisture-wicking properties. This combo of features makes the Hyperlite sheets a great option for hot sleepers, like myself.

These sheets feel very soft, and are thin and breathable, making them a great choice for year round use, especially during summer heatwaves. The fitted sheet can fit mattresses up to 17” tall, which means it should stay secure on your bed if you toss and turn.

The Hyperlite sheets feature a 200 thread count. For reference, thread count just refers to the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric. It’s not always an indicator of quality, but the thread count is often an indicator of how cool a sheet will sleep. With a lower thread count, the Hyperlite sheets will have a lot of room for air to flow through.

There are a few different types of cotton that can be used for sheets, but for traditional cotton, we love the Boll & Branch sheets. They’ve been favored by past presidents after all! It’s been rumored that both Bill Cliton and George W. Bush have used these sheets, and they’ve even endorsed them!

Cotton is a fairly traditional material to use in sheets, but often feels rather crisp. While the Boll & Branch sheets are made out of 100% organic cotton, the cotton is spun to give these sheets a much softer feel, and they’ll get softer with use.

The fitted sheet in this set has deep pockets, and can fit mattresses up to 17” tall. This is a great sign for people who toss and turn, and don’t want to fuss with readjusting the fitted sheet.

While the Boll & Branch sheets don’t feature anything specific in terms of cooling, hot sleepers will enjoy the breathable cotton in these sheets. And with a 300 thread count, there should be plenty of room for airflow.

And for color lovers out there, these sheets offer more than just white to pick from.

If you have the perfect room temperature, but still feel hot while you sleep, it could be your sheets trapping heat! Luckily Sleep Number designed some of our favorite cooling sheets.

Sleep Number infused its True Temp sheets with 37.5 active particle technology. This unique feature to these sheets makes them a bit smart! The particle technology will adjust to your body temperature and cool you off when you get too hot by dissipating your body heat.

Made of a blend of cotton, polyester, and spandex, these sheets also feature some natural breathability to them, too. Overall, hot sleepers shouldn’t sleep too hot underneath this set of sheets.

Grown in Egypt, Egyptian cotton is a little bit different from traditional cotton. The growing climate is different, which produces a different variety of cotton. Egyptian cotton is known to be much more durable than traditional cotton, and can be woven a bit tighter than traditional cotton.

Our favorite set of Egyptian cotton sheets is the Parachute Percale sheet set. They feature that classic crisp feeling to them that cotton is known for, but the sheets still feel very cozy and comfortable.

They’re weaved with a percale weave, also known as the plain weave, which leaves sheets feeling a little bit crisp and looking matte. With this weave, and being made of cotton, they should have a good amount of breathability to them, making them a good choice for hot sleepers.

The Parachute Percale sheets are some of the softest cotton sheets on the market. They also are crisp and light, providing a durable and cool sleeping experience for many nights to come.

One other type of cotton is Supima (short for superior pima) cotton. It is specifically grown in the US to be more durable and softer than traditional and Egyptian cotton.

One set of sheets that we love here at Mattress Clarity with this type of cotton is the GhostBed GhostSheets. This set of sheets is made with a blend of 60% Supima cotton and 40% Tencel fabric.

The cotton gives these sheets a bit of a crisp feel to them, but with the blend of Tencel in the construction, they’re a bit more soft and flexible over 100% cotton sheets.

Both cotton and Tencel are known to be fairly breathable, and with Tencel’s moisture-wicking properties, hot sleepers shouldn’t feel hot and sweaty while using these sheets.

The fitted sheet features the GhostGrip band, which is a 2” elastic band. This is one of the biggest and sturdiest elastic bands I’ve seen, so the fitted sheet will stay secure on your bed while you sleep.

The GhostBed Sheets, or GhostSheets, are a luxury set of sheets that combine supima cotton and Tencel. These cotton sheets feel soft, crisp, and will keep you cool at night! That's scary good!

When it comes to the construction of sheets, there are two common styles used to weave the threads: percale and sateen. Sheets weaved with a percale weave tend to feel more crisp, and leaves them looking matte.

The Tuft & Needle Percale sheets are some of our favorite sheets with this weave for a few different reasons.

Being made of Supima cotton, they feel soft to the touch, but the weave style still leaves them feeling rather crisp. This is fairly common for cotton sheets, so if you love crisp feeling cotton sheets, this is the set for you.

Cotton is fairly breathable, and the percale weave is a bit of a looser weave over sateen. So, while there aren’t any specific cooling features, you shouldn’t sleep too hot with these sheets.

The Tuft & Needle Percale sheets are some of the softest, lightest cotton sheets on the market. These sheets also have a crisp finish and fit snug against the mattress.

On the other side of the weave spectrum we have the sateen weave. This style of weave is a bit of a tighter weave, and leaves sheets feeling soft and satin like. The Puffy Bamboo sheets are a cool set of sheets that feature this satin-like weave.

Made from 100% bamboo viscose, the Puffy bamboo sheets feel very soft and luxurious. Bamboo viscose is known to be a breathable and moisture-wicking material as well. Personally speaking, as a hot sleeper, these have become a quick favorite of mine to stay cool at night.

These sheets have deep pockets on them as well, fitting mattresses up to 15” tall. They have a sturdy elastic band in the fitted sheet, with extra corner bands to securely attach the fitted sheet to your bed.

When I see the word luxury, my go to is to think of celebrities. So, when Oprah gets involved, everyone will pay attention. Cozy Earth’s luxury bamboo sheets were named the softest sheets by Oprah.

As mentioned, bamboo feels much softer than traditional cotton sheets. And with an endorsement from Oprah as the softest sheets out there, I’m inclined to agree.

In addition to feeling luxuriously soft, sheets made from bamboo viscose tend to be much more durable than cotton sheets as well. So the Cozy Earth sheets should last a long time.

For a luxury set of sheets, caring for them is fairly simple! Into the washing machine they go, and then machine dry as you would normal sheets. It’s always nice when luxury lasts a long time!

Linen sheets are some of the oldest styles of sheets. Made from fibers pulled from flax stalks, linens are a great organic and hypoallergenic pick.

Avocado makes some eco-friendly beds, and its sheets are no exception. The Avocado Organic Linen sheets are made with the traditional flax, and are very breathable and more durable than cotton sheets.

These sheets have a 100% Global Organic Textile Standard, the gold standard for environmental and sustainable products. If you’re an eco-conscious shopper, or are looking to be one, these are a great pick.

They have a more textured feel to them and feel a bit weightier than other sheets out there. They’re also fairly easy to take care of, too. Just make sure you don’t use bleach or fabric softener, and these sheets should last you a long time.

If you’re the type of person to get cold quickly or feels the need to layer up, flannel sheets are the way to go. Flannel sheets are made with a technique called “napping,” which gives it a fuzzy texture. Because of this, flannel sheets are great for keeping you warm.

Flannel can be made with a variety of materials, and our favorite flannel sheets are made from cotton: Casper’s Flannel sheet set. Here’s why they made the cut!

The brushed feel leaves these sheets feeling very soft and cozy. These sheets are made from lightweight flannel, so they’ll have some breathability to them.

You’ll stay comfortably warm, and not sweaty and stuffy under this set of sheets.

There’s a lot to consider when looking for a new set of sheets. Let’s take a look at some of the key factors before clicking that “check out” button.

Not all materials that go into making sheets feel the same. Cotton is a common material, and overall, it feels crisp to the touch. But when blended with other materials, it can make the sheets feel a bit softer.

Bamboo is naturally hypoallergenic, which is great if you have sensitive allergies. Sheets made with bamboo viscose tend to be much softer than cotton as well. Overall though, cotton and bamboo are both great options for hot sleepers.

Linens and flannels will also feel much different. The Avocado Organic Linen sheets feel textured, and the Casper Flannel sheets are made of brushed cotton, giving them a more fuzzy feel.

It’s best to know how sheets should feel before buying something you haven’t felt before!

The most common weave styles you’ll see in sheets are percale and sateen.

The percale weave is often a looser weave style, and will leave sheets feeling rather crisp and looking matte. We typically see percale weaves in sheets made with cotton. Because it’s a bit more open, percale sheets will be able to let air flow in a bit easier.

The sateen weave is a tighter weave, but it leaves sheets feeling much softer and with a satin feeling. Cotton can be woven with this weave, and we see it with bamboo as well. Because of its closer knit, sateen sheets may trap heat a little more than percale sheets.

To learn more about the differences between percale vs sateen sheets, we’ve got a whole guide for you!

Most sheets by now are machine washable. But not every type of sheet can be washed and dried the same way.

It’s very important to pay close attention to what the manufacturer recommends. Often they’ll suggest what water temperature to wash in, what cycle to use, and if you should avoid bleach or fabric softener.

Some of the sheets on this list are also recommended to be line dried. This might not be feasible for everybody, but some ways to do so if you live in a small space might be by draping the sheets over your shower curtain rod. However, most of the time, the dryer will be an option as well.

Prices always vary, and it depends on the type of weave, materials used, and how those materials are treated in the making of the sheets.

Some more luxury sets on this list are the Cozy Earth Bamboo sheets and the Avocado Organic Linen sheets. More goes into these sheets to make them eco-friendly and the companies go out of their way to remove toxins and harmful chemicals in treating the materials that go into their sheets.

But more expensive doesn’t always mean better! The Brooklyn Bedding and the Tuft & Needle sets are on the more affordable end of the price spectrum, but are still high quality sheets.

Really, there’s no one best material for sheets. Most of the time it just boils down to your personal preference. So, let’s take a moment to talk about some of the different materials out there and what makes them stand apart from one another.

There are many different types of cotton on the market, from standard cotton, to Egyptian and Supima cotton. You’ll see these types of cotton a lot, as cotton is a fairly standard material to make fabrics with.

Overall, cotton sheets will feel crisp to start, but will get softer with use. Some people like that crisp feel to their sheets, and cotton is the main material to give that feel.

Egyptian and Supima cotton are grown in different circumstances, and are typically a little bit more durable than standard cotton.

As a textbook hot sleeper, I really love bamboo sheets. One of the main features to bamboo sheets is that they’re moisture-wicking. This means you won’t sleep hot and sweaty during the night.

If you suffer from sensitive allergies, bamboo sheets will be a great pick because they’re naturally hypoallergenic. Bamboo viscose can fight common allergens and resist dust in your sleep environment.

Overall, they feel much more soft and satin-like over cotton sheets.

Another plant based fabric is Tencel, also referred to as Tencel lyocell, or just lyocell. It’s a material that’s derived from eucalyptus, and like bamboo, has some natural moisture-wicking properties to it. Sheets made with this material are a great option for hot sleepers out there!

RELATED: Eucalyptus vs. Bamboo Sheets

Linens are some of the oldest style sheets out there, and can feel more textured than some of the other materials. But over all, linen sheets are a bit weightier than cotton, and can be a bit more durable, too.

Flannels are great at retaining heat because of the way they’re made. The fabric is napped and brushed, which gives it a fuzzy feel. If you get cold quickly, flannels might be a great option to go with.

Still have questions about sheets? Luckily for you, I’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions for you.

Contrary to popular belief, there’s no one “best” thread count for sheets. You’ve got to take into consideration the type of material used, and whether or not you’re a hot sleeper. As a general range, anywhere from 200 to 800 is considered a good thread count. But certain materials have recommended thread counts. Read our best thread count for sheets article to learn more!

Here at Mattress Clarity, we love cotton and bamboo sheets. These are great materials for hot sleepers, because they’re breathable and don’t trap heat often. But always remember, what you prefer will influence what you think is the best type of sheet!

Any good sheet set should last you at a minimum a year. Bamboo viscose is known to last at least five years, so material plays a role here, too. But here are some general tips you can do to make your sheets last longer: Mild detergents will be much kinder to your sheets, and you should avoid pouring detergent directly on them. Don’t dry on a high heat. Typically, if you dry your sheets too hot, you run the risk of shrinking them. RELATED: How Often Should You Buy New Sheets?

Washing your sheets is just part of good hygiene. Because you can produce sweat while you sleep, and if you share your bed with a partner or pets, sheets can get dirty fairly quickly. It’s recommended that you wash your sheets at least once a week.
